Year C: The Wisdom Series (2013) Wisdom is a deep impulse within all parts of creation, designing their mysteries, guiding their purposes, and mentoring their functions. The Wisdom series correlates with the Luke series of the church year. These liturgies are offered for your use in whole or in part. We invite you to adapt them to your context! On this Sunday we worship with the oceans of Earth, created by the Wisdom of God. We join the Psalmists and call the sea to roar with songs of praise. With our Creator, we rejoice with whales, dolphins and other sea creatures. Create a sense of life in the deep by hanging images of sea creatures on the walls, fish, whales, sea birds, etc. "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? ~Job 38:16
This Sunday we worship with the entire living family on Earth. We celebrate birds, animals, reptiles, and all living creatures. It is appropriate to create a kingdom of the wild in the sanctuary, with creatures from rain forests and mountains, and/or the world where humans live with animals in farmlands and gardens. A special focus for this service is endangered or extinct species. "Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Praise the Lord!" Psalm 148:10
This Sunday we worship with the storm. We sing with the winds, the clouds, and the thunder. We wonder at the power of storms and the fierce expressions of the elements. In the readings, we become aware of God’s presence revealed in the power of nature. Jesus Christ, who was surrounded by fierce forces at the last supper and on the cross, is present also in the stillness after the storm. He knows the way of the storm. "The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders..." ~Psalm 29:3
We worship this Sunday with the entire universe, conscious that the universe is a vast sacred space. The special focus for this service is the spiritual impulse or presence that permeates the universe and is connected with each of us on Earth. That impulse is also called Wisdom! To capture a sense of the entire universe a congregation could create a web of creation or could project outer space images on the wall. "The Lord created me at the beginning of his work...ages ago I was set up, before the beginning of the earth." ~Proverbs 8:22-23 Calendar for Season of Creation 2013
